Overview

The Langtang Valley Trek is the closest major trek to Kathmandu, reached by a scenic drive to Syabrubesi. The trail follows the Langtang River through forest to Lama Hotel and opens into a wide glacial valley at Langtang Village, home to Tamang communities with strong Tibetan roots.

At Kyanjin Gompa (3,830 m) you spend an extra day to climb Tserko Ri (4,984 m) or Kyanjin Ri for close views of Langtang Lirung and the surrounding glaciers. With no flights and a short approach, it is a good choice if you have limited time.

Know before you go

Best time to go

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons, with stable weather and clear mountain views. In spring the rhododendron forests are in bloom, and autumn brings the clearest skies after the monsoon.

Winter (December to February) is possible but cold, especially at night. The monsoon (June to August) brings rain, cloud and slippery trails, so we do not recommend it for this trek.

Difficulty and fitness

This is a moderate trek with five to six hours of walking on most days. The climb to Tserko Ri (4,984 m) is optional and can be swapped for the shorter hike up Kyanjin Ri.

No technical skills are needed, and the trek suits beginners with good general fitness. Regular walks and some hill training before the trip are recommended.

Permits

You need a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System).

We arrange all permits for you before the trip. See Includes/Excludes for what is covered in the price.
