Overview

The Tamang Heritage Trail is a short cultural trek through the villages of the Tamang people, close to the Tibetan border north of Kathmandu. From Gatlang you walk to the natural hot springs of Tatopani and continue to Thuman and Briddim, staying in simple lodges and village homestays.

Along the way you pass stone houses, prayer flags and old monasteries, with views of Langtang Lirung and the Ganesh Himal range. The trek is less about high altitude and more about everyday life and traditions in the mountains.

Know before you go

Best time to go

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons, with stable weather and clear mountain views. In spring the rhododendron forests are in bloom.

Because the route stays at a lower altitude, winter (December to February) is also a good option, with clear days and quiet trails, though nights are cold. The monsoon (June to August) brings rain and cloud, and we do not recommend it.

Difficulty and fitness

This is an easy trek with four to six hours of walking per day. The high point, near Nagthali (about 3,165 m), is low enough that altitude is rarely a problem.

It suits most fitness levels, including first-time trekkers and families. Accommodation is simple, and in some villages you stay with local families.

Permits

You need a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System).

We arrange all permits for you before the trip. See Includes/Excludes for what is covered in the price.
